whats ups & downs? witch is better how do they function? any info apreciated, reason i ask is im looking into a second vehicle 1999 up cherokee, but dont want it if there not shiftable from 2 to 4wd like the older models & dont have full axles, dont want constant velocity shaft shit..

its the same old chero.
watch the heads, IIRC 1997-99 are the 1330 head's that like to crack. solid axles, the Fulltime case is the same NP242 and the parttime case is still the good ol'e NP231.

242 is stronger than the 231, I really liked mine in my old XJ. I will say I HATED the 249 full time case in my ZJ though.. afaik its not availble in XJ's only ZJ's though, but I could be mistaken.

cool thanx guys still debating wether to just break & buy the cummins pickup or suv for the wife, its really 4 me but we wont say that too loud!she wants a minivan but i think i'll slit my rist if i come home to that too many times in the drivway, or try to put something in the box.

249's are not available in a Cherokee.
Standard is the NP 242 or NP231. NP231's cannot be driven in 4 wheel drive on pavement, where as an NP242 can. Word on the trail says the NP231 has been proven to be stronger simply because it's more basic, almost similar to comparing an manual transmission vs automatic. Less to break.

NP231 is the 'basic' one. 2HI - 4HI - N - 4LO
In my opinion, NP242 would be the way to go obviously... but I drove my NP231 160km/hr on dry pavement for 70km one day and it didn't blow up... I'm afraid to try it with an NP242 (especially because it was by accident in the first place (don't ask)).

First I'll put a plug in. If you want to know anything about an XJ, go to www.soxja.org. Now to the meat. The '00 and '01 XJs have an occasional problem of a head cracking after overheating. They used the 0331 head casting. Is it a concern? No, because if it does crack it's an easy swap to a 0630 head. What are your odds of it cracking, about 1 in 1000. The '99 and up use a new style intake manifold. The '00 and '01 used the same LPD30 the the TJs used. '99 and down used the HPD30. The '00 and '01 also use a common rail igniton coil and do away with the distributor and wires. Big ++ As far as a transfer case goes. The 242 is not necessarily better or stronger than a 231, same goes the other way. You can't get a SYE for a 242 and have to use a Hack n Tap. If you're a non wheeler and don't want to have to think about when to go into 4WD, then the 242 is what you want. A savvy wheeler knows when and where to engage a 231, even on the highway. I have one each in each of my XJs so I can speak from experience. So, what else do you want to know.

Cool, um wow the heads as in top of engine? that sucks not sure i want that, these are exactly the things i want to learn before buying one because like you say there are certain years i will stay away from im still not sure about the 231 & 242 & how they relate to selectrac & quadtrac like 231 is select & 242 quadtrac? thx rstarch345

You got it, but you need to think NP231 and NP242 as that is how wheelers think of them. The terms "select trac" and "quadatrac" are for soccer moms and dads.
Oh and in my opinion, a '99 4.0L XJ would be the best to find. Whether it be 231, 242, manual or auto trans.

Also to answer your other question man...the Cherokee never came with the Full-time transfercase or IFS(aka CV joints) The GRAND Cherokee did come with Full-time transfercase on some and I THINK some did come with IFS(not sure but I remember hearing SOMETHING about that)
IF I where to get a GRAND(ZJ/WJ/Whatever the fawk else J..lol) I'd try to find one with a V8(some had 318's and some even came with 360's...I'd take a 318..better motor) and NON full-time transfercase

Yeah i like looking at the Grand but i wouldn't even look at it if it had IFS i'd even consider a Silverado if it were'nt for the IFS don't know maybe some new ones have solid beam axle prolly only heavy duty ooorgh! heavy duty,,, droool ooooohh! woops i had one of those moments Low, LOL, well thanks for the input guy's & gals i apreciate u's takin time to post , i'll definately be thinkin about it as in July both vehicle will be paid, it'll just be wether i can convince the wife into a truck or Jeep, anything but a fawk'n mini van aaaaaaah.
