does it have the little actuator on the back side of the axle on passenger side? it is a little square plate with stuff comin out of it, if it does its probly not workin right.

take it off, move the collar into 'lock' so it locks the shafts together, then use washers to shim the fork so it keeps the collar in 'lock'. Simple as that.

Tell you what, I went through this, stop by my place, I'll check it out. If it is in fact a YJ, it'll have an actuator. I'll show you a couple ways to solve the problem. If it is a TJ, I'm not sure exactly how they work, but can figure it out by looking at it. Just PM me.
Oh ya, and if your's is an 89, it is a YJ. TJ's were'nt made until 96 or 97. I believe 95 was last year for YJ's and then 96 was an in between year, still YJ but never put out as a 96. May have been a year prior for this. I know they had a 94 YJ though.

lol idk maybe i read it wrong but...ok i took out the thing that puts the front dif into 4x4 and then did it put hand and 4x4 works but i dont really have much vaccume at all...so i just left them off the dif and the dif is always locked now...witch i dont like but it in 4x4 right..id love to fix it right but as of right now i just got it still trying to get it on the road...i dont know much about 4x4 i had a civic before this..hated it ...haha so yea im guessin it has something to do with the vacumme i try to clean out the lines..and still nothing that is when i put it in by hand...and once i get it on the road ill come stop in so u can take a look...
your must be right as i said just got the jeep dont know much about them lol...just know it 1000 time better then a civic so it must be a yj lol

Your vacuum lines may need to be replaced from your T-case to the accuator. They are small and brittle after a couple of years. May have just pinched one or may need new ones.

well i looked at them and didnt see anything like that...but i my accuator is really rusty and when u up it into 4x4 the 4x4 light doesnt come on...i pulled in a dif vacuum line to the 4x4 light and it works..so i think it is vacuum But what do i do..just run all new lines same way from T-case to the acuuator..and replace it if i find one and hope for the best..on jeepkings.ca alot of the guy have giving me ideas..like clamp it into 4x4 make it cable not vacuum but i like the idea of it working right,,,

Yes, you can do either. I have mine locked in all the time. Then I never have to worry about it engaging or not. There are benefits to it. But others have cons with it. Like anything else. And as for the lines, all it takes is a pin hole or a back seal around the connector and your vacuum will have enough loss to not shift.

He's talking about a one piece shaft...not all XJ's came with One piece...some are two piece like your YJ You work at Peter Smith?....I can drop by sometime after I'm done work this week and have a look and show ya what we where talking about with the collar thing...also you can see the Waggy and what the difference is(between a one piece and two piece shaft) You can also make your own cable shifter outa bycle cable and stuff....hear of that being done...search the net I'm sure someone somewhere has done a write up about how to make one yourself....
