NP231 transfer cases come with either a 21 or 23 spline female input. The 21 spline shaft is frequently found in 4 cylinder applications and the 2.8L V6 While 4.0L 6 cylinder and 8 cylinder application use the 23 spline input shaft. Please let me know!.... Banana is DOWN!!

a 242 will work in a pinch
just dont use the Fulltime setting, things get hairy as they dont like clutches. and as far as I know
ALL cases were 21 spline till 1990. Then they ALL went 23. with the across the board introdution of the AX-15 transmission.
if its 89, it could be both, older is 21 spline, ewer is 23 spline.
but this isnt gospel, I could be wrong.

There is a 231 23 spline for sale on J.K right now for $75!! Steve you should probably verify you have 23 spline, I know some of the 4.0L with AW4 Auto were 21 spline..

I have that other one sitting under the grey jeep! Not sure what it is, I bought it off Pete. Do they say anywhere on the casing what spline they are? Can't remember.
